Tarrytown is a small river village about 25 miles north of Manhattan. There’s no skatepark here, which works in its favor for beginners. The waterfront paths, Losee Park, and the areas around Patriots Park are quiet enough that a new skater can fall and get back up without an audience — one of the reasons families across Westchester choose spots like this. Leon drives up from New Rochelle for Tarrytown lessons, usually about 30 minutes depending on traffic on Route 9.
The shared-use path along the river connects Tarrytown to Sleepy Hollow and Irvington, and once a student can push and turn confidently, it’s one of the best places in Westchesterto practice longer rides. The path is wide, the surface is well-maintained, and there aren’t many intersections to worry about. Leon also covers Sleepy Hollow, which is right next door — if you’re on that side, he’ll meet you there instead.

Tarrytown Waterfront Area
Open pavement near the waterfront with flat surfaces and a relaxed atmosphere. A solid spot for first-time skaters or anyone who wants to learn in a scenic, low-traffic area.
What to Expect
Tarrytown’s waterfront area is flat, wide, and smooth — one of the best surfaces along the Hudson for learning to skate. Leon meets you down by the water, at Patriots Park, or wherever works for your schedule. Brand new to skating? He’ll start from the beginning: figuring out your stance, getting comfortable on the board, and learning to push. Students who’ve been at it work on their own goals, from sharper turns to their first kickflip.
Each lesson is about an hour. You’re welcome to use your own board, and Leon can provide one if you don’t have one yet. Wear flat-soled shoes — running shoes or anything with a thick heel makes it harder to control the board. Helmets are required for students under 18. Not sure if your kid is ready?
