Staten Island has always been the overlooked borough when it comes to skateboarding. There are skaters here, but the options for instruction have been thin. Leon started coming out to the island because students kept asking, and nobody else was making the trip. Now he teaches here regularly, mostly at Owl Hollow and around the Midland Beach area.
The vibe is different from the Manhattan or Brooklyn parks. It’s quieter, less crowded, and students get more room to work. For parents looking for a structured activity that doesn’t require hauling the kids into the city, or adults who want to learnwithout the crowds, it’s a solid option. Leon brings the same energy and patience he puts into every lesson, regardless of which borough he’s in.

Owl Hollow Skatepark
A freshly built park with smooth concrete, modern ledges, and a well-designed bowl. There's plenty of flat area for beginners to get comfortable before stepping into the transitions. One of the best new skateparks in all five boroughs.
Midland Beach Area
Flat paths and open pavement near the waterfront. Leon uses this area for students who want a calm, low-pressure environment to practice pushing, turning, and building confidence without the skatepark crowd.
Local Parks and Driveways
Staten Island has wide residential streets and smooth driveways that work well for first-time skaters. Leon can meet you at a spot close to home if that's easier for your family.
What to Expect
Owl Hollow is one of the newest skateparks in New York City, and it’s the kind of place where you can start on flat ground and work your way into transitions over a few sessions without ever running out of room. That’s where most Staten Island lessons happen. Leon is one of the few instructors who makes the trip out here, and he treats it the same as any session in Manhattan or Brooklyn — same pace, same focus, no rushing.
Lessons last about an hour. The borough’s wider streets and quieter parks mean less dodging pedestrians and more space to work. Wear flat-soled skate shoes and comfortable clothes.
