A Different Kind of After-School Activity
Skateboarding builds balance, coordination, and confidence. For Scarsdale families looking for something beyond the usual sports, it's a skill kids can practice on their own time.
Scarsdale is mostly residential with large lots and well-paved driveways, and Leon does a fair number of lessons right in people’s driveways here. A flat, smooth driveway is a great surface for a first lesson — the student is in a familiar setting, there’s no one watching, and a parent can see the lesson from the house. Once a student outgrows the driveway, Leon moves them to Butler Field or one of the parks for more room.
Most of Leon’s Scarsdale students are kids, usually between 6 and 13, often signed up by parents who heard about it from another familyin the school district. Skateboarding isn’t a team sport, so it fills a different role from the organized leagues that are popular here. Kids who may not be drawn to soccer or lacrosse sometimes take to skating because it’s self-paced, there’s no tryout, and progress is visible — you either land the trick or you don’t. Leon keeps it encouraging and low-pressure, especially with the younger ones.

Butler Field
A wide, open field with paved areas around the edges. Leon uses the flat pavement for balance work, pushing drills, and turning practice. Plenty of space for beginners to spread out.
Chase Park
A neighborhood park with smooth paths and a calm setting. Good for younger students who want a low-key spot to practice without distractions.
Crossway Field Area
Open pavement near the field complex. Leon uses this spot when students want more room to work on longer rides and building speed.
What to Expect
Scarsdale’s parks have some of the smoothest pavement in southern Westchester, and that makes a real difference when you’re just starting out. Leon meets you at Butler Field, Chase Park, or whichever spot fits your level—and for first-timers, the lesson covers stance, balance, and learning to push. Students who’ve been skating pick up wherever they left off, whether that’s tightening their turns or working on a new trick.
Each session runs about an hour. Leon brings a board if you don’t have one yet, though having your own is encouraged so you can practice between lessons. Flat-soled sneakers are a must, and wear clothes you can move around in. Helmets are required for anyone under 18.
