Good Parks, Low Crowds
Glover Field and the parks around Pelham have flat, paved areas without heavy foot traffic. That gives students space to practice without dodging people or feeling self-conscious.
Pelham sits between New Rochelle and Mount Vernon, which puts it in the middle of Leon’s regular teaching area across Westchester. He’s usually within a 10-minute drive, sometimes less. Pelham is split between the Village of Pelham and Pelham Manor, and Leon teaches in both — the parks and school areas in the village, and the quieter residential streets in the manor section.
Shore Road Park runs along the water toward City Island, and the paved path there gives students a straight, flat stretch to work with. It doesn’t get as much foot traffic as some of the bigger waterfront parks in the area, so Leon can set up drills without having to dodge joggers or strollers. For families in Pelham who want their kid to learn but don’t want to drive to one of the skateparks around Westchester, keeping lessons local makes it more likely the kid sticks with it.

Glover Field
A large open field with paved areas around the perimeter. Leon uses the flat stretches for pushing practice and basic turning drills. Plenty of room for beginners to get comfortable.
Pelham Memorial Park
Near the Wolfs Lane Park area, this park has smooth walkways and enough space to work on fundamentals without interruption. A good fit for younger students.
Shore Road Park
Paved paths along the waterfront with a relaxed feel. Leon uses this spot for cruising practice and working on longer rides once students have the basics down.
What to Expect
Pelham’s small scale is a plus for learning to skate. The parks here don’t get heavy foot traffic, and the side streets stay quiet enough that a lesson can happen without constant interruptions. Leon sizes up each student before they step on the board—where they’re at, what they want to learn, and what pace feels right. For first lessons, that means stance, balance, and pushing. For returning students, he builds on what you already know.
Each session is about an hour. Wear flat-soled sneakers and clothes that don’t restrict movement. Leon can provide a board if needed, but having your own is best for practicing between lessons. Helmets are required for students under 18.
