A Short Trip from New Rochelle
Mamaroneck is a quick drive from Leon's base in New Rochelle. Lessons are easy to schedule and Leon can get there without a long commute eating into your session time.
Mamaroneck is a harbor town, and Harbor Island Park is where most of Leon’s lessons here take place. The park has a big paved parking and promenade area near the water that empties out on weekday mornings and late afternoons. Early morning sessions in particular work well because the surface is clean, the lot isn’t full, and there’s enough room to set up cones or markers for drills without getting in anyone’s way.
The village of Mamaroneck has a walkable downtown along Mamaroneck Avenue with shops and restaurants. Once students are comfortable cruising, some of them start using their board to get around the village — riding to the pizza place or the library instead of getting a ride. Leon thinks about that when he’s teaching here. He works in practical skills like navigating curb cuts, stopping quickly at crosswalks, and riding on slightly rougher village sidewalks, not just smooth park paths.

Wide paved areas along the waterfront with plenty of flat ground. Leon uses the open stretches away from the beach entrance for lessons. The smooth surface and open views make it a favorite for both kids and adults.
Memorial Park
A local park with paved paths and enough room to spread out. Leon uses this spot when Harbor Island is crowded or when students prefer something closer to the village center.
Columbus Park
Smaller park with flat pavement and a quieter feel. Good for focused sessions where students want to work on specific skills without distractions.
What to Expect
Harbor Island Park’s wide waterfront paths make for a great first classroom—long stretches of flat, smooth pavement with room to roll without worrying about curbs or obstacles. Leon adjusts every lesson to the student. First-timers learn how to stand, push, and stop. Students with some experience work on turning, riding transitions, or whatever skill they want to sharpen.
Sessions run about an hour. Wear flat-soled sneakers and something you can move in. Not sure what size board to get? Leon can help with that, and he’ll bring one if you don’t have your own yet.
