Why Learn to Skate in Manhattan

Convenience You Can Count On

With skate-friendly parks spread across the island from the Lower East Side to the Upper West Side, there's always a great spot within a short walk or subway ride. Leon meets you where it's easy for you.

World-Class Skate Infrastructure

Manhattan's skate parks have seen major investment in recent years. Smooth concrete, well-designed transitions, and open flat areas make them ideal learning environments for every skill level.

Year-Round Skating Culture

Skaters in Manhattan ride all year. That energy is contagious. Learning here means joining a vibrant community that's out pushing through every season, and Leon can help you find your place in it.

Popular Lesson Locations

Leon teaches at parks and open spaces across Manhattan. Here are some of the most popular spots for lessons.

LES Coleman Skatepark

Lower East Side

One of Manhattan's best-designed skateparks, Coleman features smooth concrete bowls, ledges, and open flat ground perfect for beginners. Located under the Manhattan Bridge, it offers shade on hot days and a real neighborhood feel. Leon frequently teaches here because of its variety—there's something for every level in one park.

Chelsea Piers Skatepark

Chelsea / Hudson River

Sitting right on the Hudson River with views of the waterfront, Chelsea Piers offers a spacious layout with mellow transitions and plenty of flat space for practicing fundamentals. The area is well-maintained and less crowded during weekday mornings, making it ideal for focused private instruction.

Riverside Skatepark

Upper West Side

Nestled in Riverside Park at 108th Street, this skatepark is a hidden gem for Upper West Side and Harlem residents. It's compact but well-built, with a smooth bowl and flat area. The park setting is calm and tree-lined—a welcome change from the intensity of Midtown—and perfect for students who want a relaxed learning environment.

Central Park

Midtown / Upper Manhattan

While not a skatepark in the traditional sense, Central Park's smooth pathways and wide-open plazas are excellent for learning the absolute basics—balance, pushing, turning, and stopping. Leon often starts complete beginners here before transitioning to a park environment, and it's one of the most scenic places to learn anywhere in the world.

What to Expect

Every Manhattan lesson begins with a conversation. Leon wants to understand where you are, where you want to go, and what —if anything—is holding you back. From there, he builds a plan around your goals and your body.

For beginners, that usually means learning how to stand on the board, push with control, shift your weight to turn, and stop safely. For returning or intermediate skaters, lessons focus on cleaning up technique, building confidence on transitions, or working toward specific tricks.

Lessons are typically one hour. Leon provides boards for students who don’t have their own, and recommends wearing closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing. Helmets are strongly encouraged and required for students under 18.
