How Much Do Skateboard Lessons Cost?

I get it. You want to know the price before you call someone. Most instructor websites make you fill out a form or send an email just to find out what they charge. That always felt backwards to me, so here’s what skateboard lessons cost in the New York area right now.

In the New York metro area, private one-on-one skateboard lessons typically range from $80 to $200 per hour. The wide spread comes down to instructor experience, whether gear is included, and whether they travel to you. My rate is $120 per hour with travel, boards, and safety gear included.

On the lower end, you’re usually getting someone with a year or two of teaching experience, often booking through a platform like Thumbtack or Bark that takes a cut. On the higher end, you’re paying for deep experience, proper safety training, and someone who teaches full time and knows how to work with your specific age group.

My rate for a single private lesson is $120 per hour. That includes the lesson planning, travel to your location (I come to you), and I bring boards and safety gear if you need them. If you buy a package, the per-session price drops.

Usually, yes. Buying a multi-session package drops the per-lesson cost by 15–25%, and most kids need at least three to five sessions to build real comfort on the board. One lesson tells you if your kid likes it—a package is for when you already know they do.

Most instructors, myself included, offer multi-session packages at a discount. One lesson is enough to know if skateboarding is something you want to keep doing. If it is, packages make the math work better.

I also do a monthly standing session: $360 per month for four weekly lessons at a reserved time slot. That one works well for families who want a consistent schedule.

In a group of four, each person gets about 15 minutes of focused instruction per hour instead of 60. That’s fine for a fun session, but progress will be slower than private lessons.

Some skate schools in Brooklyn and Manhattan run group classes as low as $50 per person, but class sizes can reach 10 or 12 kids. Ask how many students are in the class before you sign up. A “group lesson” with 12 students is really just supervised skating.

4. What do you get from a paid skateboard lesson?

More than just someone standing next to your kid at the skatepark. A good private lesson includes a structured plan matched to the skater’s level, real-time technique correction, fall training, and—in my case—travel to your neighborhood park or driveway with boards and pads included.

With an experienced private instructor, you’re paying for a structured lesson plan tailored to your skill level, real-time feedback on your stance and technique, safety instruction (learning how to fall is the first thing I teach), and the convenience of having someone come to your neighborhood park or driveway.

An instructor who gets you standing and pushing comfortably in two sessions is a better deal than one who takes five sessions to cover the same ground, even if the second one charges $30 less per hour. When you’re comparing prices, factor in how many total sessions you’ll need.

5. How do you spot overpriced skateboard lessons?

Compare total cost to results, not just the hourly rate. An instructor who gets your kid comfortable in two sessions at $120 each is cheaper than one who takes five at $80. Watch for large upfront package requirements before a first lesson, and ask about insurance, gear, and specific experience with your child’s age group.

If someone is charging $40 for a private one-on-one lesson in New York City, ask why. They might be new and building a client base, which is fine as long as you know what you’re getting. Or they might be cutting corners on safety training and insurance.

On the flip side, $200+ per hour should come with serious credentials. Ask about their teaching experience, whether they’re insured, and how long they’ve been working with your age group. Also watch out for companies that require you to buy a large package upfront before your first lesson. Try a single session first.
